PAUL MERSON EXPRESSES HIS 'BIGGEST CONCERN' WITH RUBEN AMORIM

Paul Merson and Clinton Morrison have shared their main concerns about Ruben Amorim and Manchester United after the Portuguese manager failed to win his first game.

Last Sunday, United and Ipswich drew 1-1 away at Portman Road, with strikes from Marcus Rashford and Omari Hutchinson.

He then won the Europa League, with Rasmus Hojlund scoring twice each side of the interval, earning Amorim praise from the Old Trafford supporters for breaking his duck at his new club.

Merson expressed worry over Amorim's difficulties with his media obligations, as the new manager stated that he had more press engagements in one week at United than he did in four years at Sporting Lisbon.

'My biggest concern was after the interview, when he remarked, "That's all now; I've never done so many interviews. Now I need to focus on the team," Merson remarked.

'No, you're the manager of one of the world's top football clubs.

'You will conduct interviews when they request it and when you are instructed to do so.'

The analyst went on to compare Amorim's status at Sporting to United, hinting that English media members will be less supportive of him than those in Portugal.

'That was the one concern that I think he has to deal with because when you're in Portuguese football, you'll give an interview here and there, and they'll win a lot,' he said.

'And, you know, he'll have the press in his palm because he wins every week, so they want a piece of him.

"Now he has to keep them happy at the same time."

Morrison questioned United's choice to employ Amorim in the midst of the season after Erik ten Hag was granted such a large transfer budget this summer.

United spent £180 million on five new players during the Dutchman's previous transfer window, only to remove him at the end of October.

'Remember, [Amorim has] come in; he hasn't signed his players,' Morrison stated.

'And what bothers me about Manchester United is that they could have made this appointment in the summer and allowed Ten Hag to come in and purchase his players.

'Now Ruben Amorim must come in and work with those players.'

The former Crystal Palace attacker said that, despite Ten Hag's FA Cup success against Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, the Red Devils should have taken the gutsy decision to fire him at the conclusion of last season.
'If they had introduced Ruben Amorim in the summer, he could have acquired his own players and given them a lot to work with,' he said.
