Flooding Concerns After Heavy Rains Hit Gomoa West
Heavy rains on Sunday caused significant flooding in parts of Gomoa West, leaving many residents distressed and calling for urgent action from local authorities. The downpour, which lasted several hours, overwhelmed drainage systems, turning streets into rivers and inundating homes and businesses.
Residents in communities like Apam and Ankamu were among the worst hit. Several houses were submerged, forcing families to wade through knee-deep water to salvage their belongings. Some roads became impassable, cutting off transportation and disrupting daily activities.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with water levels rising alarmingly fast. Kwame Nkrumah, a shop owner in Apam, lamented, "Every time it rains like this, my shop gets flooded. I’ve lost so much. The authorities need to fix this drainage issue now!"
Others expressed fears about the health implications of stagnant water, which could lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases like cholera and malaria.
Local leaders acknowledged the severity of the situation. Hon. Sarah Armah, Assembly Member for Ankamu, stated, “This flooding is a wake-up call. We need to improve our drainage infrastructure and ensure proper waste management to prevent such disasters.”
Environmental experts have long warned about the consequences of poor urban planning and blocked drains in flood-prone areas. According to Francis Nyarko, a hydrologist, the situation in Gomoa West highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions. “Desilting drains, implementing strict waste disposal regulations, and creating flood zones are essential to mitigating future disasters,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been deployed to assess the damage and provide relief to affected residents. Relief items, including food, water, and temporary shelter, are being distributed to displaced families.
As rains continue to batter parts of Ghana, many hope that the Gomoa West incident will serve as a catalyst for authorities to prioritize flood prevention measures.
