Zonda Technologies Ghana Limited, a leading retailer of heavy-duty trucks, has partnered with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to promote road safety awareness among drivers in Kumasi, ahead of the yuletide season. The primary goal of this initiative is to address the common mistakes that drivers make on the road, educate them about their rights, and explain the role of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department. The theme of this year’s event, “Responsible Driving, a Tool for Accident-Free Christmas,” underscores the importance of safe driving during a period when traffic accidents tend to increase.
Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Director of NRSA, emphasized the urgency of such initiatives, given the alarming rise in road traffic fatalities. He revealed that 2,038 people have lost their lives in road accidents between January and October 2024, a stark increase compared to the 1,848 fatalities recorded in the same period in 2023. The Ashanti Region, where Kumasi is located, accounted for a significant portion of these deaths, with 524 fatalities, making up 25% of the national total. Boateng highlighted the critical need for educational programs like this one to help reduce road accidents and protect lives, particularly as the holiday season approaches, which typically sees more vehicles on the road.
Zonda Tec’s Human Resource Manager, Daniel Nseboah Amoah, discussed the company’s commitment to road safety as part of its corporate social responsibility. Since 2020, Zonda has trained over 5,000 drivers in Accra and Kumasi, providing essential safety education to improve their driving practices. Amoah expressed the company’s intention to expand these training programs to other parts of the country and the sub-region, ensuring that their customers and the broader public benefit from enhanced safety awareness. One participant, Yaw Adusei Poku, shared his positive experience, noting that despite having over 20 years of driving experience, he learned valuable lessons during the workshop. In addition to the road safety training, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service also participated in the event, urging the public to be mindful of fire hazards, particularly as the harmattan season approaches.
