Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the actor and WWE superstar, was recently spotted on the set of Disney’s live-action Moana remake, sporting massive muscles and new tattoos. However, Johnson has revealed that his larger-than-life appearance is not all natural.
“That’s a suit that took a long time to put on,” Johnson shared with Extra. “I’m so happy you said, ‘You bulked up,’ because when you say that, it means you couldn’t tell.”
In the upcoming film, Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui from the 2016 animated hit. Despite his famously shredded physique, the star needed an elaborate bodysuit to achieve Maui’s mythical proportions. Johnson explained the process was time-consuming, saying, “That is a couple of hours every day of transforming, putting that on.”
Photos of Johnson on set recently surfaced online, even though the production team went to great lengths to prevent leaks. “We shot outside, and when those pictures surfaced, I was like, ‘S***, we got caught,’” he admitted. The crew had erected walls to block paparazzi, but resourceful photographers circumvented these efforts by using boats to capture the images.
The live-action Moana remake is slated for release in the summer of 2026. Johnson will star alongside Catherine Laga’aia, who steps into the title role previously voiced by Auli’i Cravalho. The story, set in ancient Polynesia, follows Moana, the determined daughter of a coastal village chief, as she embarks on a daring voyage to find the legendary demigod Maui and save her people.
While fans eagerly await the remake, Disney has kept the magic alive with the release of Moana 2, an animated sequel that hit theaters on November 29, 2024. The continuation of the beloved tale explores new adventures and challenges faced by Moana and her village.
