Trey Songz ordered to pay $11m for assaulting a police officer
A Las Vegas judge has ordered Tremaine Neverson, popularly known as Trey Songz, to pay $11 million in damages after allegations that he and his security guards assaulted a police officer during an incident in November 2021. The officer, Tyrelle Dunn, who serves as a Maryland Capitol police officer, claimed he was attacked while attempting to rescue his wife from a situation where she reported being held against her will.
The incident took place at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas as part of Songz's 37th birthday celebration. The singer, known for hits like Bottoms Up and Say Aah, invited a group of women to his hotel room, including Dunn's wife. According to the allegations, she felt trapped, screamed for help, and was unable to leave. Her distress prompted Dunn to intervene, resulting in a confrontation with the artist and his security team.
Dunn's affidavit detailed the injuries he sustained during the altercation, which included fractured eye sockets and permanent scarring. The injuries reportedly left him unable to work for an extended period. Court documents obtained by TMZ revealed that the damages awarded to Dunn are intended to cover his medical expenses, pain and suffering, and punitive damages.
While Trey Songz faced no criminal charges for the incident, Dunn pursued civil litigation. Songz allegedly ignored the legal proceedings, leading the judge to rule in Dunn’s favor. This ruling comes amidst a series of legal challenges for the 39-year-old artist. Earlier this year, he settled a $25 million lawsuit stemming from allegations of raping a woman at a 2016 party. Other accusations against him include gender violence, false imprisonment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
As part of the settlement for the 2016 case, Songz's legal team agreed to dismiss the matter upon completing specific terms by June 2024. A statement reported by Radar Online confirmed that all required terms must be fulfilled before formal dismissal.
The $11 million judgment highlights the ongoing controversies surrounding Trey Songz, whose career has been overshadowed by repeated legal troubles. Despite his music success, the Virginia-born artist’s public image continues to face scrutiny due to allegations of violent and abusive behavior.
