UK-based Nigerian man forfeits wedding after receiving bride price list of N3.5m

UK-Based Nigerian Man Cancels Engagement Over Bride Price Dispute

A Nigerian man residing in the UK has withdrawn his marriage proposal to a Nigerian woman after receiving a traditional bride price list from her family. The list, which amounted to an overwhelming ₦3.5 million, included items like clothing, drinks, livestock, and cash allocations for various family members, sparking a heated discussion about cultural practices and their implications on relationships.

Princess  Adeola, a social media influencer, shared the story on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, accompanied by images of the detailed bride price list. The list outlined specific cash demands such as ₦15,000 for family youth, ₦5,000 for village youth, ₦20,000 for grandparents, and ₦20,000 for stepfathers, among others.

The couple reportedly met through Adeola’s WhatsApp channel, which she created to connect singles and help them find love. Despite the challenges of a long-distance relationship, the UK-based man was deeply committed to the woman, with plans to take her abroad and sponsor her education. However, his enthusiasm turned to heartbreak upon receiving the bride price list and discovering the woman supported her family’s demands, citing Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

In a post detailing the incident, Adeola expressed her disappointment:
There’s this guy on my platform who met a lady here in Nigeria while he was in the UK. Despite the challenges of a long-distance relationship, he was committed to her. He even sought my advice, and I encouraged him to go for it. But yesterday, he reached out to me, distraught, after receiving a bride price list from her family totaling ₦3.5 million.

The man ultimately ended the engagement, stating that the exorbitant demands made him feel disrespected. Adeola continued:

His pain wasn’t just the list itself but the fact that the woman he loves supports her family’s demands, claiming everything is expensive in Nigeria. Why should anyone demand such an outrageous amount just for marriage? It’s a shame, and I hope women learn from this.

The incident has ignited conversations about the role of cultural customs in modern relationships and how excessive demands can discourage potential suitors. Adeola lamented the situation, noting that the woman might lose a good man due to her family’s greed.
