The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a violent altercation involving Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Wassa Amenfi Central, and members of the Adjakaa Manso community in the Western Region. The incident occurred on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

According to a statement released by the Police, the conflict began when the NDC candidate and her team encountered a vehicle parked in the middle of the road in Adjakaa Manso while returning from a political engagement. Members of her team reportedly confronted the driver, leading to a dispute. This initial misunderstanding escalated as some residents of the community got involved, resulting in two individuals sustaining injuries and two vehicles being damaged.

The Police have called for calm, urging the community to cooperate with investigators and refrain from interfering with the process. “Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence to ensure justice is served,” the statement assured.

Concerns Amid Election Tensions

As Ghana approaches its general elections on December 7, 2024, incidents like this raise concerns about rising tensions between political parties and their supporters. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, a notable figure in her constituency, may face significant campaign challenges following this incident.

The Police emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order during the election period, stressing that any acts of violence or disruption will be dealt with promptly. This situation highlights the critical importance of fostering peaceful political engagement to avoid jeopardizing local stability.

Related Incident Involving Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s Convoy

The altercation comes shortly after another troubling incident involving Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the NDC. On Friday, November 29, 2024, her convoy was attacked along the Akuse-Kpong stretch of the Akosombo-Accra Highway.

A preliminary Police report indicated that a dispatch rider traveling in the opposite direction threw an object at the windscreen of one of the vehicles in her convoy, causing significant damage. This incident has heightened concerns about the safety of political leaders and their teams during the election period.

“We assure the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated, as ensuring the safety of all individuals during this election season remains a top priority,” the Police said in a statement.

Upholding Security During Elections

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its dedication to creating a safe environment throughout the electoral process. Investigative teams are working diligently to resolve both incidents and hold those responsible accountable.

As political campaigns intensify across the country, the safety of candidates, supporters, and the general public remains paramount. The Police have called on all stakeholders to prioritize peaceful engagement and collaboration to ensure the 2024 elections proceed without further disruption.
