EC Suspends Special Voting in Eastern and Western Regions Amid Ballot Leakage Concerns
The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the suspension of special voting in the Eastern and Western Regions due to alleged ballot leakages. This decision, taken less than a week before the scheduled Election Day, has sparked widespread reactions, particularly from political parties and civil society groups.
In a press briefing, the Chairperson of the EC explained that the commission received reports of compromised ballots that could potentially undermine the integrity of the electoral process. "Our mandate is to ensure a free, fair, and credible election. Any threat to this must be addressed decisively," she stated.
The affected ballots, intended for security personnel, media practitioners, and election officials voting ahead of the general populace, were reportedly leaked, raising fears of tampering and potential voter manipulation. Investigations are currently underway to identify the source of the leak.
In response to the incident, the EC has ordered the immediate recall of all special voting ballots distributed in the two regions. New ballots will be printed under heightened security measures and redistributed. However, this has created logistical challenges, as the process must be expedited to avoid delays in voting timelines.
The EC reassured stakeholders that measures are being implemented to prevent further breaches. These include the deployment of additional security personnel at printing houses, enhanced monitoring, and tighter control of the distribution process.
Political parties have expressed mixed reactions to the EC's decision. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) described the development as “deeply troubling” and demanded transparency in the ongoing investigations.
On the other hand, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) commended the EC for taking swift action but emphasized the need for accountability. "The electoral process is sacrosanct, and any loopholes must be addressed immediately to maintain public confidence," an NPP spokesperson remarked.
Smaller parties and independent candidates have also voiced concerns, urging the EC to avoid similar occurrences in other regions.
Civil society organizations, including the Ghana Integrity Initiative, have called for an independent probe into the leakages. “The credibility of the election is at stake. Any lapses in the system must be uncovered and rectified to ensure public trust,” a statement from the group read.
With just days to go until the elections, the EC faces immense pressure to ensure the smooth conduct of special voting and the main polls. The commission has assured the public that all efforts are being made to address the issue swiftly and uphold the integrity of the process.
The suspension of special voting in these regions has added another layer of tension to an already charged political atmosphere. Observers and stakeholders alike are keenly watching the EC's next steps as Ghana prepares for a crucial election.
