Election 2024: Special Voting in Eastern and Western Regions Rescheduled to December 5

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has rescheduled the special voting exercise in the Eastern and Western Regions for the 2024 General Elections to Thursday, December 5, 2024. This adjustment, initially set for December 3, comes after consultations with key stakeholders to address logistical challenges and ensure a seamless voting process.

The special voting exercise is an integral part of Ghana's electoral process, allowing individuals such as security personnel, electoral officers, and accredited media practitioners to cast their votes ahead of the general elections scheduled for December 7. These individuals play critical roles on election day and cannot participate in the general voting exercise due to their official duties.

In a statement, the EC explained the rationale behind the decision, citing the need to guarantee operational efficiency. “The rescheduling will provide adequate time to address logistical constraints and ensure all eligible voters have the opportunity to exercise their franchise in a secure and transparent environment,” the statement read.

Stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organizations, have largely welcomed the decision. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have both expressed support for the move, highlighting its potential to prevent unnecessary disruptions. “A smooth and credible voting process is essential for maintaining public confidence in the elections, and this rescheduling is a step in the right direction,” said an NPP spokesperson.

Despite the positive reception, some concerns remain. Certain advocacy groups have urged the EC to improve its communication efforts to avoid voter confusion. They have also called for a robust monitoring system to ensure transparency during the special voting exercise.

The EC has assured the public that measures are in place to safeguard the integrity of the process. These include deploying enhanced security at polling stations, improving the transportation of election materials, and ensuring strict adherence to electoral guidelines.

This adjustment underscores the dynamic nature of election management in Ghana and the EC’s commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections. As the nation prepares for the December 7 polls, the rescheduling of the special voting exercise is expected to ensure that critical personnel fulfill their duties while participating in the democratic process.

With just days to the elections, all eyes remain on the EC to deliver on its promise of an efficient and transparent election, fostering trust and participation across the country.
