KATH Begins Construction of Four-Storey Pharmaceutical Complex

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has commenced the construction of a modern four-storey pharmaceutical complex, a significant milestone aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana. The facility, once completed, will be a state-of-the-art addition to KATH's infrastructure, further cementing its reputation as one of the leading teaching hospitals in West Africa.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, expressed optimism about the project's potential to revolutionize pharmaceutical services at the hospital. He noted that the complex would house advanced pharmaceutical laboratories, dispensing units, and research facilities. "This project underscores our commitment to providing top-notch healthcare services to the Ghanaian population. It will also enable us to meet the growing demand for specialized pharmaceutical care," Dr. Owusu-Danso stated.

The project is estimated to cost millions of Ghana cedis and is being funded through a collaborative effort involving the hospital's internally generated funds, donor support, and government backing. The facility will feature modern storage systems to ensure the safe and efficient management of medicines, reducing wastage and enhancing the availability of essential drugs for patients.

The Director of Pharmacy at KATH, Mrs. Abena Ankomah, emphasized the importance of the complex in addressing existing challenges in pharmaceutical services. "The current setup has limited capacity to handle the increasing number of patients and the complexity of prescriptions. This new building will allow us to better serve the public and provide an environment conducive to innovation in pharmaceutical care," she said.

The construction of the pharmaceutical complex aligns with the hospital's strategic plan to upgrade its infrastructure and expand its service delivery capacity. Over the years, KATH has been at the forefront of healthcare delivery in Ghana, serving as a referral center for patients across the country and beyond.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, who graced the occasion, lauded the hospital’s management for their vision and dedication to improving healthcare. He assured them of the government’s continuous support for such initiatives, stressing the need for collaboration between public and private entities to drive development in the health sector.

Construction is expected to be completed within the next two years, after which the facility will be fully operational. The new pharmaceutical complex is anticipated to serve as a training hub for pharmacy students and professionals, further boosting the capacity of Ghana’s healthcare workforce.

The commencement of this project is seen as a significant step towards addressing the gaps in healthcare infrastructure in the country, with stakeholders hopeful that it will improve patient outcomes and contribute to the overall efficiency of the healthcare system.

As the construction progresses, KATH remains committed to ensuring that the facility meets international standards, reflecting its status as a center of excellence in healthcare.
