Bono East NIB Arrests Two Techiman SHS Staff and Three Others Over Stolen Rice
The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in the Bono East Region has apprehended two staff members of Techiman Senior High School (SHS) and three accomplices in connection with the theft and illegal transportation of 56 bags of rice meant for the school. The operation, which took place in Techiman, is part of the NIB's ongoing efforts to clamp down on theft and diversion of essential commodities in the region.
According to preliminary investigations, the stolen rice was part of government-supplied food items intended to support the school’s feeding program. However, a tip-off from concerned citizens led the NIB to intercept the consignment at a location on the outskirts of Techiman. Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the suspects had planned to sell the rice to private buyers.
The two school staff members, whose names have been withheld for investigation purposes, allegedly collaborated with the three accomplices to remove the rice from the school’s storage facility. Sources close to the investigation disclosed that the staff members were key players in coordinating the theft, while the accomplices facilitated the transportation and sale of the rice.
Bono East Regional NIB Director, speaking to the press, highlighted the gravity of the case. “This is a betrayal of trust, as the rice was meant to support students’ feeding. We are determined to ensure the culprits face the full rigors of the law,” he stated.
The seized rice has been returned to the school, and authorities are working to assess the extent of the theft. The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court soon.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among stakeholders in the education sector, with calls for stricter measures to protect school resources. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Techiman SHS has urged the school management and law enforcement agencies to investigate and address the loopholes that enabled the theft.
“This incident is a wake-up call. We need to strengthen oversight and accountability mechanisms to prevent future occurrences,” said a PTA representative.
The Bono East Regional Education Directorate has also expressed its displeasure over the incident. In a statement, the directorate assured the public that steps would be taken to prevent such breaches in the future while supporting the ongoing investigation.
This development comes amid increasing concerns over the mismanagement of resources in public institutions, highlighting the need for vigilance and transparency in managing supplies intended for vulnerable groups.
The NIB has urged citizens to continue reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that community support is essential in ensuring accountability.
