Dr. Ayew Afriyie Alleges Mahama Sponsored Attack on Asanteman Buses

Dr. Ayew Afriyiet, Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, has accused former President John Dramani Mahama of orchestrating an attack on buses accompanying the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during his visit to Techiman and Nkoranza. The Asantehene was in the Bono East Region to pay his last respects to the late Nkoranzahemaa, Nana Adutwumwaa Dudaa Kani II.

Speaking on the Wontumi Morning Show, Dr. Afriyie alleged that the individuals involved in the attack were members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). “Investigations revealed that those who carried out the despicable act were all NDC members,” he stated, citing information purportedly provided by locals in Techiman.

According to the MP, the attackers shot at and threw stones at the buses, causing damage and endangering lives. He directly blamed the former president for failing to prevent his supporters from engaging in violent behavior, especially against the Asantehene’s entourage.

“He [Mahama] can’t talk to his boys to stop attacking the Asantehene,” Dr. Afriyie said. He further called on the former president to rein in his followers, emphasizing the need for respect towards traditional leaders and their activities.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for calm and unity as Ghana prepares for the 2024 general elections. Supporters of the NDC, however, have dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, revered as a unifying figure in Ghana, has often urged Ghanaians to prioritize peace and respect for tradition over political rivalry. The recent attack has reignited conversations about the intersection of politics and traditional authority in Ghana, with many urging politicians to avoid actions or rhetoric that could inflame tensions.

As the allegations make headlines, political observers note that the charged political environment is likely to see more such claims and counterclaims. The need for peaceful co-existence among political parties and respect for traditional institutions remains a crucial issue ahead of the elections.

Call for Investigations

Many stakeholders are now calling on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Meanwhile, traditional leaders and civil society organizations continue to advocate for mutual respect and non-violence as Ghana navigates a critical election year.

The former president is yet to officially respond to the allegations. However, NDC representatives have dismissed Dr. Afriyie’s statements, calling them a distraction from pressing national issues.
