Transgender Star Wins Model of the Year Over Five Women

Alex Consani, a 21-year-old transgender model, was crowned Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in London last night, edging out five women shortlisted for the prestigious accolade. The California-born star’s victory highlights the British Fashion Council’s (BFC) efforts to celebrate diverse voices in the industry.

Consani, known for her distinctive bleached hair and eyebrows, started modeling in 2015. At the ceremony, she wore a ripped Union Flag dress by Turkish-British designer Dilara Findikoglu and used her acceptance speech to honor trailblazing black transgender models like Connie Fleming, crediting them for paving the way for her success.

The other nominees included British model Alva Claire, Los Angeles native Amelia Gray, South Sudanese model Anok Yai, Chinese model Liu Wen, and Mona Tougaard, who has Danish, Turkish, Somali, and Ethiopian heritage. Yai, considered a frontrunner, voiced her support for Consani on social media, stating, "If you’ve seen the effort Alex has put in, you’d understand how proud I am of her. But Alex can be proud, and I can be exhausted at the same time."

Consani’s victory follows the BFC’s increased recognition of LGBTQ and underrepresented talent. Last year, black trans model Kai-Isaiah Jamal narrowly missed winning the award, which has been previously held by iconic names like Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne.

The Model of the Year award honors individuals who have made a global impact, dominated editorial campaigns, and transcended the catwalk. Consani’s groundbreaking year included walking in around 20 shows for the Fall/Winter 2024 season and working with high-profile brands like Marc Jacobs and Mugler.

Consani also made history in October as one of the first trans models, alongside Valentina Sampaio, to appear on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway. Her rise marks a significant milestone in fashion, with the BFC continuing to spotlight diverse talent through initiatives like London Fashion Week, which showcases the work of over 250 designers globally.

Both the BFC and Consani’s representatives have been contacted for further comments on her historic win.
