200,000 Repentant Terrorists Surrender and Lay Down Arms in North East – CDS
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has revealed a remarkable milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism. Speaking to the press, he announced that over 200,000 repentant terrorists have surrendered and dropped their arms in the North East region. This development marks a significant step forward in the nation’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
General Musa explained that the mass surrender is a result of a combination of sustained military operations, strategic engagements, and community-driven peace initiatives. The CDS highlighted the efforts of the Armed Forces in neutralizing threats while encouraging non-combatants to embrace peace.
“Many of these individuals have been living under the control of terror groups for years, coerced into activities that they didn’t choose. Through deliberate actions and continuous advocacy, they have chosen to surrender and rejoin society,” he stated.
The surrendered terrorists, comprising men, women, and children, have been undergoing de-radicalization programs under the Nigerian military’s Operation Safe Corridor initiative. This program provides psychological counseling, vocational training, and reintegration support to help the repentant individuals transition back into society.
Local communities have also played a pivotal role in this process. Traditional and religious leaders, alongside non-governmental organizations, have been instrumental in fostering acceptance for these individuals and ensuring a smoother reintegration process.
However, the CDS acknowledged that challenges remain. He emphasized the need for sustained vigilance to prevent the resurgence of terrorist activities and to ensure the sincerity of those surrendering. “We must continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, border security, and community collaboration to consolidate these gains,” he noted.
The North East region has been one of Nigeria’s most volatile areas for over a decade, plagued by the activities of groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. The surrender of 200,000 terrorists represents a significant victory in the fight against insurgency and reflects the effectiveness of the Armed Forces’ multi-faceted approach to counter-terrorism.
