Manchester United have entered discussions to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, but face competition from their rivals, Manchester City, in the race for the Swedish striker. Gyokeres, who has been in sensational form this season, scoring 24 goals in 21 matches, is expected to be one of the most sought-after players in the upcoming January transfer window. His impressive tally follows an equally successful campaign last year, where he netted 43 goals to help Sporting win the Primeira Liga title.

Ruben Amorim, the manager who brought Gyokeres to Portugal, is now in charge at Manchester United, and the striker is understood to be a top target for the club. United's attack has been widely criticized this season, with a lack of a consistent goalscorer being one of their major weaknesses. Amorim’s familiarity with Gyokeres could make a move for the 26-year-old a priority as he looks to strengthen his squad in the winter transfer window.

Sky Germany reports that initial talks have been held between United and Sporting over a potential transfer, with the Premier League club showing a keen interest in the forward. However, the situation has become complicated as Manchester City have also expressed interest in Gyokeres. The arrival of Hugo Viana as City’s new sporting director has reportedly sparked a strong desire to sign the striker, as City looks for an alternative to Erling Haaland. With Julian Alvarez having left for Atletico Madrid in the summer, City are eager to add depth to their attacking options.

Gyokeres' contract at Sporting runs until 2028, meaning the club is in a strong position to negotiate. The striker’s release clause is around £83 million, but it is believed that a bid closer to £66 million would be considered due to a gentleman’s agreement between the player and the club. Gyokeres, however, has expressed his happiness at Sporting and has not shown a clear desire to move, especially following Amorim’s departure. He recently said he was enjoying his time at Sporting and was saddened by Amorim’s exit, though he refrained from speculating about his future.

Amorim, too, has remained tight-lipped about the possibility of signing Gyokeres for United. When asked about the situation while still at Sporting, he joked that discussing a potential transfer could get him into trouble, indicating that the striker’s future might only be decided at the end of the season. Despite the speculation, it appears that Gyokeres' next move will depend on the club's plans and the offers that come his way.
