As Ghana approaches the December 7 elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and fair electoral process. Speaking on behalf of the Council, Chairman Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and united, emphasizing the importance of protecting democracy.
In a statement to the media, the NDC expressed concerns about the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to a credible election. Despite peace agreements signed by presidential candidates, the NDC questioned the government’s sincerity, citing past incidents of electoral violence, particularly during the Ayawaso and Techiman elections in 2019 and 2020.
“The NPP is desperate and knows its time is up,” the Council stated. “They are employing every tactic to cling to power, including voter intimidation and abuse of incumbency. Ghanaians are fed up with years of mismanagement, poor governance, and economic hardships under this administration.”
The Council criticized what it described as the NPP’s last-minute attempts to gain favor with voters. “For nearly eight years, the government has impoverished Ghanaians, neglected infrastructure, and poorly paid workers. Yet, on the eve of elections, they suddenly find funds to repair roads and distribute handouts to voters. This is an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians, who deserve better,” they said.
The NDC also raised alarms over the use of vigilante groups disguised as national security personnel, urging the government to ensure a safe and intimidation-free voting environment. While commending the Ghana Police Service and National Elections Task Force for their security efforts, the party insisted that more must be done to prevent violence.
In addition, the Council criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for what it called repeated lapses in transparency. Recent issues, such as the mismanagement of ballot paper reprints in the Western and Eastern regions, have raised doubts about the EC’s credibility. “We cannot afford another election marred by shifting percentages and questionable vote tallies,” the Council stressed.
The NDC urged its supporters and polling agents to remain vigilant on Election Day, emphasizing their critical role in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy. “This election is not just about the NDC; it is about the future of Ghana’s youth and the restoration of good governance,” the statement read.
With just days to go, the party is intensifying voter education and mobilizing grassroots support. “The price of success is eternal vigilance,” the Council reminded Ghanaians, calling for collective action to ensure that the will of the people prevails.
