The Kumawood film industry, a key player in Ghana’s creative arts scene, has seen its share of challenges in recent years.

In the midst of efforts to revive its glory days, tensions have surfaced among some of its most prominent figures.

Recently, popular actor and comedian Dr. Likee, known for his unique brand of humor, responded to comments made by veteran actor Bill Asamoah, shedding light on underlying issues within the industry.

In a candid and thoughtful reply, Dr. Likee addressed the controversy while emphasizing unity, respect, and the need for collective action to save Kumawood.

The Source of the Rift

The disagreement began when Bill Asamoah, a respected figure in Kumawood, expressed concerns about certain trends in the industry.

While his critique may have been aimed at constructive feedback, Dr. Likee perceived the tone as dismissive and, at times, hostile.

“There’s a way you speak that shows you hate me,” Dr. Likee remarked, highlighting the importance of respectful communication.

He suggested that Asamoah’s words carried undertones of personal bias, which could potentially harm the collaborative spirit needed to rebuild Kumawood.

A Call for Respect and Collaboration

Dr. Likee’s response was not just about defending himself but also a broader call for unity among Kumawood stakeholders.

He acknowledged the challenges facing the industry, including financial struggles, limited resources, and evolving audience preferences. However, he stressed that internal conflicts and divisive attitudes only exacerbate these issues.

“Kumawood is not about one person,” Dr. Likee stated. “We all have a role to play, and respect is key.

Criticism should uplift, not tear down.” His message was clear: rebuilding Kumawood requires mutual respect, open dialogue, and a focus on solutions rather than blame.

The Changing Face of Kumawood

Once a powerhouse in Ghanaian entertainment, Kumawood has struggled to adapt to changing times.

The rise of digital platforms, shifts in audience demand, and competition from other industries have presented significant challenges.

Dr. Likee, whose comedic skits have gained massive traction online, represents a new wave of Kumawood stars leveraging digital platforms to reach audiences.

However, this shift has not been without controversy. Traditional actors like Bill Asamoah have voiced concerns that these new formats may dilute Kumawood’s core identity.

In his reply, Dr. Likee acknowledged these concerns but argued that innovation is essential for survival.

“The world is changing, and Kumawood must change with it,” he said. “We need to embrace both the old and the new, finding ways to merge tradition with innovation.”

Addressing the Root Problems

Beyond the interpersonal tensions, Dr. Likee pointed to systemic issues hindering Kumawood’s growth. These include:

1. Inadequate Funding: Many productions lack the financial backing to produce high-quality content that competes with international standards.

2. Lack of Marketing: Kumawood has struggled to market its films effectively, limiting their reach and impact.

3. Fragmentation: Internal conflicts and lack of collaboration have weakened the industry’s collective power.

To address these issues, Dr. Likee called for a united front. “We need to stop fighting each other and focus on the bigger picture,” he urged. “Kumawood has the potential to rise again, but only if we work together.”

A Vision for the Future

Despite the challenges, Dr. Likee remains optimistic about Kumawood’s future.

He envisions an industry where traditional storytelling meets modern technology, creating content that resonates with both local and international audiences.

To achieve this vision, he emphasized the importance of mentorship, training, and investment.

Established actors like Bill Asamoah, he argued, should play a key role in guiding the next generation of Kumawood stars while embracing the innovative approaches they bring.
