Walewale – A chilling ambush on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway has left one person injured, sparking fresh concerns about the safety of traders and travelers along this vital corridor. The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 4, 2024, near the outskirts of Walewale in the North East Region.
According to eyewitness accounts, a group of cattle traders traveling in a convoy was suddenly attacked by unidentified gunmen. The assailants reportedly emerged from a nearby thicket and opened fire on the vehicles, forcing them to a halt. Amid the chaos, the gunmen demanded money and other valuables, creating panic among the traders.
One trader, who sustained gunshot wounds to his leg during the attack, is currently receiving treatment at the Walewale Government Hospital. Health officials describe his condition as stable. Other traders in the convoy escaped unhurt but were visibly shaken by the traumatic incident.
Speaking to the press, a survivor recounted the terrifying moments. “We heard gunshots, and before we knew it, they had surrounded us. They demanded money and anything valuable. It was frightening; we thought we wouldn’t survive,” he said.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from community leaders and security agencies. North East Regional Police Commander, ACP Samuel Yeboah, confirmed the attack and assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. “We have deployed a team to the area to investigate the incident and provide patrols to ensure the safety of traders and other road users. We urge the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police,” he said.
This attack is one of many that have plagued travelers on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway in recent months. The highway, a key route for trade and commerce between the Upper East and Northern Regions, has become a hotspot for criminal activities, including armed robbery.

The North East Regional Coordinating Council has also expressed concern, pledging to work with national security agencies to find lasting solutions to the insecurity.
As investigations continue, many traders are reconsidering their travel plans, fearing for their safety. “We are only trying to make a living, but the fear of attacks is crippling our businesses,” one trader lamented.
