Police Arrest Fake Soldiers, Impound 296 Vehicles in FCT

Abuja, Nigeria – In a major crackdown on criminal activities, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended a group of individuals posing as military personnel. Alongside the arrest, law enforcement officers impounded a total of 296 vehicles in various locations across the city.

The operation, conducted over the past two weeks, targeted criminals exploiting military uniforms and fake identification to intimidate residents, evade security checks, and perpetrate crimes. The FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Tuesday, describing the suspects as part of a larger network of criminal elements operating under the guise of the Nigerian Army.

Modus Operandi of the Suspects

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects used fake military paraphernalia, including uniforms, badges, and fake identification cards. They reportedly engaged in acts of extortion, harassment, and the unauthorized seizure of vehicles from unsuspecting motorists.

“Impersonation of military personnel is a serious offense and a grave threat to the safety of law-abiding citizens,” Commissioner Garba stated. “The police are committed to eliminating such criminal activities in the FCT.”

Impounded Vehicles

During the operation, police impounded 296 vehicles, many of which were linked to criminal activities. These vehicles were recovered from various checkpoints, abandoned locations, and hideouts identified during intelligence-driven operations.

Commissioner Garba further explained that some vehicles were found to be carrying contraband goods, while others were suspected to be stolen. The vehicles are currently being held at designated police facilities, pending further investigations and possible prosecution of the suspects.

Public Cooperation and Security Assurance

The Commissioner called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. He also encouraged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure continued safety in the region.

"The success of this operation is a testament to the dedication of our officers and the cooperation of Abuja residents. We urge the public to provide timely and credible information that will help us combat crime effectively," he said.

Next Steps

The arrested suspects are undergoing interrogation and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The police are also collaborating with the Nigerian Army to authenticate the suspects' claims and ensure accountability.

The FCT Police Command reassured residents that it would continue to prioritize their safety, promising to intensify patrols and surveillance to clamp down on all forms of criminal activities in the capital city.

This operation is part of broader efforts by the FCT Police Command to curb rising crime rates and restore public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
