Bawumia Unveils E-Gates at KIA: Ghana’s Vice President Introduces Digital Border Control Systems
In a major step towards modernizing Ghana’s immigration processes, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled the country’s first-ever electronic gates (E-gates) at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra. The E-gates, part of Ghana's broader effort to enhance border security and improve traveler experience, represent a significant leap towards embracing digital technology in border control systems.
Dr. Bawumia, who has been at the forefront of Ghana’s digital transformation, highlighted that the introduction of these E-gates will streamline passenger processing, making it faster and more efficient. Travelers, both locals and foreigners, can now clear immigration at the airport with ease by simply scanning their passports at the E-gates. The system is designed to reduce long queues and waiting times, allowing passengers to move through immigration checkpoints with minimal hassle.
The E-gates also come with advanced biometric technology that will improve the security of Ghana’s borders. The system will verify the identity of passengers using facial recognition and fingerprint scans, ensuring that unauthorized individuals are prevented from entering or leaving the country. This will enhance Ghana’s efforts to prevent illegal immigration and ensure that travelers comply with the necessary immigration protocols.
The Vice President expressed confidence that the introduction of the E-gates will set the pace for the future of border management in Ghana and across the region. He emphasized that the government is committed to transforming the country into a digital economy, with innovation and technology at the center of its development agenda. Dr. Bawumia also noted that this initiative aligns with the government's broader vision to create a more efficient, transparent, and secure environment for both businesses and citizens.
The launch of the E-gates at KIA is seen as a significant milestone in Ghana’s journey towards becoming a leader in digital border control and a model for other African countries to follow. With the success of this project, it is expected that more borders and airports across the country will adopt similar systems in the near future.
