Ghana is gearing up for its general elections on December 7, 2024, with two main candidates vying for the top spot. Former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing off against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While some analysts predict a runoff election, others believe that Mahama may secure a one-touch victory due to the growing frustration among Ghanaian voters. These days, many voters are prioritizing their living conditions over traditional party loyalty and ethnicity.
In the past, Ghanaians voted based on party traditions and loyalty. However, with the current economic woes and high cost of living, voters are now considering their living conditions as the focal point for their choice of candidate.
Former President John Agyekum Kufour once warned Ghanaians to vote based on their living conditions, not just promises made by candidates.
The NPP, led by Nana Akufo Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also campaigned against the NDC in 2016, citing the bad economy, poor living conditions, and high cost of goods and services. However, after eight years in office, many Ghanaians are wondering why the NPP led by Nana Addo and the "economic messiah", Dr. Bawumia has not been able to stabilize the cedi or solve the high cost of living.
The big question on everyone's mind is: should the same standards used by Nana Addo and Bawumia in 2016 to judge John Mahama, be applied to the NPP today? With the NPP's silence on the bad state of the economy, it's clear that they're feeling guilty about their bad leadership, which has pushed many Ghanaians into suffering.
We must not vote based on free SHS... because it has come to stay; says John Mahama. We must vote based on the current high cost of living and sufferings in the country." The Free SHS will be made better and more appetizing under Mahama because he started the Progressively Free SHS.
If you believe that corruption under this government needs to be investigated, remember that Dr. Bawumia is part of this government and the corruptions; and so cannot investigate himself and his government. Only a different political party, like the NDC, can hold the government accountable for its actions.
There's an old saying that goes: "Trouble doesn't go looking for people, people go looking for trouble." Well, the good news and the big trouble ahead is; while some people are getting ready to take office in January 2025, others are preparing to go to jail.
