Director Keysha: Breaking Barriers as East Africa’s Only Female Music Video Director
Director Keysha, East Africa’s only female music video director, has shared her inspiring journey in the male-dominated industry. Her passion for directing stems from her admiration of world-renowned video director Dave Meyers, whose innovative work has been a global benchmark for creativity.
“Dave Meyers has always inspired me. He’s not your ordinary director. He’s worked with A-list artists globally. The graphics, editing, set designs—everything he touches turns into gold,” Keysha revealed in an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke.
Despite her dedication, Keysha has faced significant challenges, particularly gender-based discrimination in the industry. She credits her mother and manager for supporting her through these struggles. “Discrimination has been a challenge, but my mum and manager have been instrumental. My manager has coached me to be fearless,” she said.
Keysha's breakthrough moment came with the music video for Dimba Refix by Arban Tone star Gody Tennor. The project, scripted and shot within three days, was her first to hit a million views. “Dimba Refix was a significant milestone for me. It was amazing to work with a new genre of artists,” she said.
Among the artists Keysha has collaborated with, she highlighted rapper Khaligraph Jones as the most professional and cooperative. She praised his work ethic and respect for the creative process. “Khaligraph Jones is the most professional artist I’ve worked with. He came on set early, fully adhered to the script, and inspired me with his level of professionalism,” Keysha said.
Describing his personality, she added, “He’s so cool, very chilled, and radiates positive vibes. There’s a lot of wisdom to learn from him. Watch out for more projects together.”
Keysha has directed some of the region’s most recent music videos, including The Mack is Back by Khaligraph Jones, Dimba Refix by Gody Tennor, and For You by Kethan. Her journey is a testament to her resilience and talent, breaking barriers and setting new standards in East Africa’s music scene.
