In a significant development, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 88 individuals who were allegedly recruited to provide unauthorized security services at polling stations in the Western North Region. The suspects, comprising 86 men and two women, were intercepted on board two Metro Mass Transit buses at Benchema near Asawinso on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals had been recruited from various locations in the Greater Accra Region, including Adenta, Oyarifa, and Madina. They claimed to have been hired to provide security during the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
The police are currently investigating the matter and are working to locate the person who allegedly recruited the individuals. The suspects are assisting with the investigation, which is ongoing.
The Western North Region is notably the home region of New Patriotic Party candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, who won the region in the last election. The police have been on high alert to avert any disturbances during the election.
In a related development, the National Election Security Taskforce has implemented a reward system to encourage the public to report electoral crimes before the December 7 polls. Informants can share relevant information with the police or other security agencies and receive rewards ranging from GH¢1,000 to GH¢20,000.
The Inspector General of Police believes that this initiative will improve public participation in safeguarding the elections. Potential informants can reach the police election task force via the toll-free hotline 0800-311-311.
The opposition has consistently accused the government of plotting to foment trouble and potentially rig the election. However, the police have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and orderly voting process.
As the election draws near, the police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The police are also working closely with other security agencies to ensure that the election is conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner. With the reward system in place, the police are confident that they can prevent any electoral malpractices and ensure a free and fair election.
