Police Intercept 88 Individuals Allegedly Recruited for Election Security in Western North
Security operatives in the Western North Region have intercepted 88 individuals suspected to have been unlawfully recruited for election-related security purposes. The operation occurred on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality, raising concerns about the potential misuse of security structures ahead of the 2024 general elections.
According to preliminary investigations, the individuals were being transported in two buses to a concealed location when they were intercepted by a joint team of police and National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) operatives. The recruits, mostly young men aged between 18 and 30, were reportedly being mobilized by a private organization with alleged political affiliations.
Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ernest Kwame Asare, disclosed that the operation was initiated following a tip-off. “Our intelligence led us to intercept the group before they reached their destination. Preliminary evidence suggests they were being prepared for roles that could undermine the lawful conduct of the upcoming elections,” he stated.
Documents and uniforms resembling those of official security agencies were retrieved from the buses, along with an assortment of tools that raised suspicions about their intended use. The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
DCOP Asare emphasized that security recruitment must follow due process and warned against attempts to manipulate security operations for political purposes. “We urge political parties and organizations to respect the sanctity of lawful processes. Any attempt to jeopardize the peace and security of the region will be met with the full force of the law,” he added.
Civil society organizations and election observers have expressed concern over the incident, calling on authorities to intensify measures to prevent politically motivated violence. “This raises serious questions about the integrity of the upcoming elections. It is crucial that security agencies remain neutral and proactive in addressing such threats,” remarked Mr. Daniel Kyei, a representative of the Election Integrity Network.
The Western North Regional Security Council has convened an emergency meeting to discuss strategies for maintaining peace and order in the region as election preparations intensify.
The incident highlights the need for vigilance and transparency as Ghana prepares for a high-stakes electoral process. Authorities have assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring the safety and credibility of the elections.
