Former President John Dramani Mahama has promised to ensure that key projects in the Ashanti Region will be completed when he returns to the presidency after the 2024 general elections. Addressing a mammoth gathering of supporters during a campaign rally in Kumasi, Mahama stressed that the region was crucial in the country's development and said a number of projects which were supposed to have been executed in the region had been left uncompleted by the present government.
Mahama, who ruled the country from 2012 to 2016, made reference to a number of projects that were initiated during his time in office but which the incumbent government has either delayed or failed to complete. These include major road constructions, educational facilities, and health infrastructure projects that he promised to revive under his leadership.
"We cannot afford to leave these vital projects unfinished, especially when they have the potential to create jobs and improve the quality of life for our people. I am committed to finishing what we started for the Ashanti Region," Mahama said, emphasizing that the region had not been adequately prioritized in recent years.
The former president also promised to develop the region's infrastructure and social services, including health and education, to spur economic growth and reduce regional disparities. According to Mahama, the completion of these projects will contribute significantly to the region's socio-economic transformation.
These statements by Mahama have brought mixed reactions, as some praised him for his commitment to finishing unfinished projects, while others question the feasibility of such promises amid current economic challenges. However, the former president remains confident that he is able to bring in those changes he has promised with the right leadership and strategic planning.
Besides infrastructure development, he promised to address unemployment, especially among the youth, through skills development and job creation.
The Ashanti Region is one of the strongholds of the opposition NDC and is expected to be one of the key battlegrounds in the coming election, with Mahama's promises seen as part of his efforts to regain lost support and secure a convincing victory.
