Elections 2024: GAF to Provide Standby Support for Peaceful Polls
As Ghana prepares for the much-anticipated 2024 general elections, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced its readiness to provide standby support to ensure a peaceful and secure electoral process. The assurance comes as the nation braces for one of the most competitive elections in recent years, with tensions and stakes running high across the political divide.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, reiterated the military's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation's democracy during a press briefing in Accra. He emphasized that GAF's role would be to complement the efforts of the Ghana Police Service, which has primary responsibility for maintaining law and order during elections.
“The Ghana Armed Forces will remain neutral, professional, and focused on its constitutional mandate. Our primary objective is to ensure that Ghanaians exercise their democratic rights in a peaceful and secure environment,” Vice Admiral Amoama stated.
He further explained that GAF personnel would be on standby in strategic locations nationwide, ready to respond swiftly to any incidents that might threaten the security of the electoral process.
To ensure effective support, GAF is collaborating with the National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF), which comprises various security agencies, including the Police, Fire Service, Immigration Service, and National Intelligence Bureau. The task force has already mapped out potential flashpoints based on intelligence reports and previous election data.
The Armed Forces will deploy Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) equipped with logistical and technical resources to address any security breaches. These teams will operate under strict rules of engagement to avoid excessive force while maintaining order.
A senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, highlighted the importance of strategic deployments:
“We will prioritize visibility in identified hotspots to deter any group or individuals from engaging in activities that could undermine the electoral process. Our role is purely supportive, and we will only act when called upon by the police.”
In the lead-up to the elections, GAF has undertaken several preparatory activities to enhance its readiness. These include:
The CDS also disclosed that GAF had acquired drones and surveillance equipment to monitor activities in hard-to-reach areas, ensuring no part of the country is left vulnerable.
In the face of heightened political tensions, concerns have been raised about the potential for security agencies, including GAF, to be influenced by political actors. However, Vice Admiral Amoama assured the public of the military’s neutrality and professionalism.
“We have reminded all personnel of the importance of maintaining neutrality and upholding the principles of democracy. Any officer found engaging in partisan activities will face severe disciplinary actions,” he warned.
This statement aligns with GAF’s historical reputation for maintaining impartiality during electoral processes, a tradition the institution is determined to uphold.
Public confidence in the military’s role in securing the elections remains high. Civil society organizations and election observers have commended GAF’s proactive measures and called for continued transparency in their operations.
Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), lauded GAF’s efforts, stating,
“The presence of the Armed Forces serves as a strong deterrent to potential troublemakers. We encourage GAF to maintain its neutrality and work closely with other stakeholders to safeguard our democracy.”
Political parties have also expressed their support for the military’s involvement. However, they have urged GAF to ensure that its actions are not perceived as favoring any particular candidate or party.
GAF’s involvement will not end with the announcement of election results. The military will remain on standby to address any post-election disputes or unrest that may arise.
“The post-election period is often more critical than the voting day itself. We are prepared to deal with any challenges while respecting the rights of all citizens,” Vice Admiral Amoama affirmed.
While GAF and other security agencies play a crucial role in maintaining peace, the CDS called on citizens to act responsibly during the elections. He urged political parties and their supporters to avoid inflammatory language and actions that could incite violence.
“We all have a role to play in preserving Ghana’s peace and stability. Let us put the nation first and reject any form of violence,” he appealed.
As the 2024 elections approach, the Ghana Armed Forces’ readiness to provide standby support underscores its dedication to protecting the country’s democratic values. With a robust strategy and commitment to professionalism, GAF is poised to play a pivotal role in ensuring that the elections are conducted in a peaceful and secure environment.
Ghanaians can take solace in the fact that their Armed Forces are prepared to stand as a bulwark against any threats to the nation’s peace and democracy.
