A shocking scandal has engulfed the National Service Scheme (NSS) in Ghana, with reports emerging that the management has registered over 40,000 fake NSS personnel. These ghost workers allegedly receive a monthly stipend of GHS715, which totals a staggering GHS 28.6 million every month.

To put this into perspective, the annual loss would be approximately GHS 343.2 million, a significant drain on the country's resources. The reports further allege that these funds are being siphoned into personal accounts, raising serious questions about corruption and accountability within the NSS.

Gifty Oware-Mensah, the Deputy Executive Director of the NSS, has found herself at the center of this controversy. As the second-in-command of the NSS, her role in this scandal is yet to be fully determined.

The National Service Authority (NSA) has obtained a 10-day injunction from the High Court to prevent the publication of investigative reports by The Fourth Estate. The injunction, served on the Media Foundation for West Africa, restrains the publication of any reports concerning the NSA and its staff until their side of the story is heard.

The move comes after The Fourth Estate announced it would publish a series of investigative reports on the NSA, starting December 3, 2024. Despite the injunction, The Fourth Estate has already published one report. The NSA's actions have raised concerns about freedom of the press and the public's right to know. The injunction has sparked debate about the limits of press freedom and the role of the judiciary in protecting it.

@receiptsgy “Dr. Bawumia said Ghana card has removed ghost names everywhere but his government creates false personalities to siphon state funds through NSS”

@bongoideas- “Each year the National Service Secretariat creates a list of fake university graduates, enrolls them onto the NSS platform, posts them to companies, and then pockets all the allowances paid. The money is literally paid to ghosts... Ghana is a crime scene!”

@adwoa_dela “If the NSS saga is true, then voting this government out will not be enough justice for Ghanaians. People need to be prosecuted”

@joyce_bawah “Suppressing posts, restricting posts, using the courts to stifle accountability and transparency! Hahaa well the NSS report has arrived”
