John Mahama Seeks Otumfour's Blessing Ahead of December 7 Election

Ahead of Ghana’s December 7 general election, former President John Dramani Mahama, who is also the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), paid a courtesy visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace. The visit, which took place on December 3, 2024, was part of Mahama’s efforts to seek the Asantehene's blessings as he prepares for the crucial election.

During the visit, Mahama formally communicated his intentions to contest the upcoming presidential election and sought Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s guidance and support. As expected, the Asantehene received the former president and his entourage with warmth and offered them his blessings for the campaign ahead.

Accompanying Mahama on the visit was his son, along with other key figures from the NDC, including party officials and prominent members of the party's leadership. The meeting was seen as an important diplomatic gesture, as the Asantehene holds significant influence in Ghanaian politics, especially in the Ashanti Region, which has historically been a stronghold for the NDC’s rivals, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mahama’s visit to the Manhyia Palace is part of a series of engagements that political candidates often undertake to seek the approval and blessings of traditional leaders before the election. The former president’s actions are understood to be aimed at securing a broad base of support as he campaigns for a second term in office, following his loss to President Akufo-Addo in the 2020 election.

In his remarks, Mahama expressed his gratitude to the Asantehene for the warm reception and reiterated his commitment to serve Ghana with integrity and dedication if elected. Otumfuo Osei Tutu, in turn, wished Mahama well in the election, offering prayers for peace and fairness throughout the electoral process.

The visit was symbolic not only for Mahama's campaign but also for the role of traditional leadership in Ghana's political landscape. By seeking the Asantehene’s blessing, Mahama is acknowledging the influence of the monarchy in shaping the country’s political fortunes. The event was a moment of political significance as both Mahama and the Asantehene recognized the importance of unity and peace ahead of the election.
