The Futility of Foolish Feuds: A Call to Ghanaian Youth

In recent times, I woke up to a disturbing report that left me both amused and appalled. It is alleged that a group of youth from the Ashanti Region traveled to Techiman with the sole intent of bragging and daring the youth of Techiman to prove their strength. In their words, they claimed there was "no man" in Techiman and invited anyone bold enough to confront them.

This reckless bravado has since sparked a needless confrontation. Reports indicate that some Techiman youth retaliated by throwing stones at the vehicles of these brash visitors, causing damages. Such acts of provocation and counter-reaction are deeply troubling and highlight a glaring problem with a segment of our youth in Ghana today.

A Nation Stuck in Gyimie (Foolishness)

While the world progresses rapidly—embracing artificial intelligence, building electric trains, and achieving groundbreaking technological advancements—some of our youth seem stuck in a backward mindset, more suited to 1818 than 2024. What purpose does such mindless aggression serve? What does fighting your fellow brothers and destroying property achieve in the grand scheme of life?

The energy and resources expended on such foolish ventures could be channeled into far more meaningful endeavors. Imagine the same energy used to organize protests for better governance, advocate for developmental projects, or even start community-building initiatives. Instead, we find ourselves stuck in a vicious cycle of petty disputes and empty displays of so-called "strength."

The Cost of Foolishness

Throwing stones at someone’s vehicle or traveling to provoke others is not just a waste of time—it is an act of barbarism that drags our nation down. We cannot continue to blame our leaders for the state of the nation when we, as citizens, are failing to live responsibly. The youth are supposed to be the backbone of the country, the hope for tomorrow. If this is how we channel our energy, what future are we building?

It is also important to call on the police to investigate and bring those involved to justice. The law must work to deter such senseless acts in the future. Let this be a lesson to all youth: recklessness has consequences, and no one is above the law.

A Better Use of Strength

If you are a youth looking to prove your strength, there are countless ways to do so constructively. Volunteer to help resolve conflicts in regions like Bawku, where tensions are high and strong men are needed to bring calm and restore peace. Dedicate your strength to advocacy for development in your communities. Or better yet, invest your energy in personal growth and skill acquisition.

The world is moving fast. Those who fail to adapt and grow will be left behind. We cannot afford to remain in this cycle of self-destructive behavior while others build empires. The future belongs to those who are innovative, disciplined, and united—not those who fight among themselves over trivialities.

A Call to Reason

Let us rise above this “gyimie” (foolishness) and begin to think critically about our actions. The youth of Ghana have the power to shape the future of this nation, but only if we choose to use our energies wisely. It is time to leave behind these petty, destructive behaviors and focus on building a better Ghana.

Let us remember: strength is not about who can fight the hardest; it is about who can build the strongest. The world is watching, and the future is waiting. Let us not waste it.
