The communities of Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas are currently grappling with significant water supply issues. The main cause of these shortages is the adverse impact of illegal mining activities, commonly known as *galamsey*, which have severely affected the region's water sources.
Illegal mining has been a longstanding problem in Ghana, especially in rural areas, where miners extract gold and other minerals without regard for environmental preservation. In Cape Coast and Elmina, the consequences are devastating. Rivers, streams, and other natural water sources that local communities rely on for drinking, agriculture, and daily living are being polluted by harmful chemicals like mercury and cyanide used in gold extraction. While the government and local authorities have made some attempts to clamp down on illegal mining, the issue persists due to weak enforcement and the high demand for gold. Without urgent and sustained intervention, the water supply problems in Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas will continue to worsen.
To resolve this issue, there needs to be stricter enforcement of laws against illegal mining, more investment in sustainable water management solutions, and increased public awareness about the importance of protecting water sources. Only through collective action can the communities in Cape Coast and Elmina hope to restore and safeguard their water resources for future generations.
