Kwabena Urges Young Artistes to Embrace Highlife

Renowned Highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has encouraged young artists to embrace Highlife, a genre he believes is essential for crafting hit songs. Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz, the celebrated artiste expressed concern over the dwindling attention Highlife receives from the younger generation of musicians.

Kwabena Kwabena noted that despite Highlife’s profound influence on modern music, many artists neglect its potential. “Highlife is thriving, and if you want hits, stick to the genre. Some may think it’s old-school, but many of Ghana’s biggest hits—such as Fameye’s Very Soon, King Paluta’s Makoma, KiDi’s Lomo Lomo, and Stonebwoy’s Jejereje—are deeply rooted in Highlife,” he explained.

The Aso hitmaker urged young musicians to look beyond trends and reconnect with the foundational sounds of Ghanaian music. He emphasized that Highlife is not only a rich cultural legacy but also a tried-and-tested formula for success.

Reflecting on his illustrious two-decade career, Kwabena Kwabena expressed immense gratitude to his fans and supporters. “I am humbled, honestly. I owe a debt of gratitude to the Almighty God and to my fans worldwide for their support,” he said.

Kwabena Kwabena also highlighted his journey’s high points, underscoring the significance of longevity in the music industry. “Being in the industry for close to two decades is my biggest reward. Next year marks 20 years, and staying relevant all this time is the greatest gift God has given me,” he noted.

The accomplished musician credited his enduring career to his passion for Highlife and his determination to keep the genre alive. He believes that its unique rhythms and storytelling capabilities continue to resonate with audiences, both locally and internationally.

Kwabena Kwabena’s call for a renewed embrace of Highlife comes at a time when many Ghanaian artists are experimenting with genres like Afrobeats and hip-hop. However, he insists that the roots of Ghanaian music should never be forsaken.

As he looks forward to celebrating two decades in the music industry next year, Kwabena Kwabena remains optimistic about the future of Highlife. He hopes that younger artists will see the genre as a pathway to success while contributing to its evolution.

In his closing remarks, the celebrated Highlife star reaffirmed his dedication to the genre and his fans. “My journey is a testament to the power of staying true to your roots. Highlife is not just music; it’s a way of life,” he concluded.
