Ed Sheeran will be the first-ever Western artist to perform in Bhutan

Ed Sheeran, the British singer-songwriter known for his multiple Grammy wins and a string of chart-topping hits, is set to make history with his upcoming concert in Bhutan. On January 24, 2025, Sheeran will perform at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, becoming the first-ever Western artist to hold a concert in this unique, landlocked country.

The announcement, made via Sheeran’s Instagram, was accompanied by the greeting Kuzuzampola! which means Hello in Dzongkha, Bhutan’s official language. Sheeran expressed his excitement, saying, I’ve heard wonderful, wonderful things about Bhutan, signaling his anticipation for this groundbreaking performance.

Bhutan, a Buddhist monarchy nestled in the eastern Himalayas with a population of around 700,000 people, has long been known for its distinctive approach to tourism. The country began opening its doors to the outside world in the 1970s, but it maintains a model that prioritizes sustainable and responsible tourism. Visitors to Bhutan are required to pay a $100-per-day fee, which is part of the country’s high-value, low-impact tourism strategy. The money raised from this fee is used to support Bhutan’s public education and healthcare systems, helping preserve the country’s unique culture and environment.

Sheeran’s performance in Bhutan will mark a significant moment in the global music scene, not only for the country but also for the artist himself. The concert will be a rare and special event, given Bhutan’s limited exposure to large-scale Western entertainment. The singer, who has become a global sensation with hits like Shape of You and Perfect, will now be bringing his music to a place that is as unique and culturally rich as his own sound.

The concert in Bhutan is part of Sheeran’s Mathematics tour, which is expected to include stops in various countries around the world. Sheeran’s commitment to performing in such a rare and picturesque location underscores his desire to connect with fans across the globe and bring his music to new, often overlooked audiences. This concert will undoubtedly be a historic moment for both Sheeran and the people of Bhutan.
