Kylian Mbappe, the French superstar, has recently been criticized for his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for Real Madrid, with some commentators suggesting that he may have made the “biggest mistake of his life.” Now at 25 years old, Mbappe joined the La Liga giants on a free transfer after his contract with PSG expired this summer. Although a move to Real Madrid had been anticipated for some time, there were moments when it seemed uncertain, especially after a previous proposed transfer fell through.

Last season, Mbappe made it clear that he intended to depart from PSG, attracting interest from various Premier League clubs, but ultimately, Real Madrid emerged as his most likely destination. Despite his immense talent and potential to be a future Ballon d’Or winner, his start at Real Madrid has been underwhelming, raising concerns among fans and analysts alike.

In his 19 appearances for the club across all competitions, Mbappe has managed to score ten goals and provide two assists. However, the team’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has faced challenges in finding the right balance within the squad, particularly with both Mbappe and Vinicius Junior playing in similar attacking roles. This tactical dilemma has contributed to a shaky start for the French forward at his new club.

The situation worsened last week when an injury-plagued Real Madrid suffered a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League. The match was characterized by missed opportunities for the Spanish side, and Mbappe notably had a penalty saved by Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher. Following the match, Real Madrid legend Guti expressed concerns about Mbappe’s performance, suggesting that he appeared to be lacking confidence and seemed “shy” on the pitch. Guti remarked, “He looked scared” before taking the penalty, indicating a struggle with self-assurance in high-pressure situations.

Adding to the chorus of criticism, French presenter Cyril Hanouna, who is believed to have a favorable relationship with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, stated that Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid was a grave error. Hanouna asserted, “He made the biggest mistake of his life by going to Real Madrid. He is in a spiral of failure.” He further emphasized that Mbappe should have remained at PSG, where he could have pursued a Champions League title and the prestigious Ballon d’Or, benefiting from the support and resources of the club that had invested so heavily in him.

According to Hanouna, had Mbappe stayed, he would have been in a position to become the cornerstone of PSG, a role he could have dominated. The presenter’s comments reflect a broader sentiment that perhaps the allure of Real Madrid, with its storied history and tradition of success, comes with immense pressure that can be difficult for any player to navigate, especially one transitioning from a different club environment. The ongoing challenges at Real Madrid may lead to further scrutiny of Mbappe's choice, raising questions about whether he can adapt and thrive in such a demanding setting.
