Sam Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, has passionately urged Ghanaians to vote for John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections. According to him, Mahama is the only leader committed to ensuring that the anti-LGBT+ bill is signed into law. Sam George believes this step is essential to safeguard Ghanaian culture, family values, and religious principles.

Speaking at the final rally of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sam George made an emotional appeal to voters, asking them to prioritize the future of their children and the moral foundation of the country.

“We need John Dramani Mahama to come and sign the bill into law. If you love the children of Ghana, if you love our family values, if you love your faith as a Christian, as a Muslim, or even as a traditionalist, you know that we do not support homosexuality,” he declared with conviction.

The anti-LGBT+ bill, introduced in August 2021, has been a contentious issue in Ghanaian politics. While Parliament approved the bill in February 2024, President Nana Akufo-Addo has yet to sign it into law, a delay that has led to widespread criticism from the opposition and activists like Sam George.

This bill, formally known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, seeks to criminalize same-sex relationships and related activities. It has received overwhelming support from religious leaders, traditional authorities, and a significant portion of the Ghanaian population. Supporters argue that the bill is vital for preserving Ghana’s traditional values and resisting foreign cultural influences.

Sam George has been one of the most vocal advocates for the bill. At the rally, he accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of neglecting the issue and failing to reflect the values of Ghanaians.

He argued that a vote for the NPP’s presidential candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), would amount to endorsing homosexuality and policies that undermine Ghanaian cultural and religious values.

“A vote for Bawumia and NAPO is a vote for homosexuality, it is a vote for comprehensive sexuality education, and Ghanaians say no to ‘Trumu Trumu,’” he stated emphatically, using a term commonly associated with anti-LGBT+ sentiments in the country.

For Sam George, the stakes are high. He believes that John Dramani Mahama is the only leader who can be trusted to sign the bill into law and uphold Ghana’s values. He pointed to Mahama’s track record of respecting the country’s traditions and moral standards as evidence of his commitment.

“This is not just about politics; it’s about protecting the soul of our nation. John Mahama will stand firm and ensure that this bill becomes law,” he added.

The delay in signing the anti-LGBT+ bill has become a key point of contention in the ongoing election campaign. The NDC has seized the opportunity to portray itself as the party that truly represents the cultural and moral values of the Ghanaian people.

Sam George’s speech at the rally reflected the strong emotions surrounding the issue. He called on Ghanaians to reject leaders who fail to uphold the country’s core values and to stand united in defense of their faith, culture, and family structure.

“Ghana is a country of deep cultural and religious heritage. We cannot allow anyone to erode what makes us who we are. Let us vote for John Mahama and protect the future of our children and families,” he said.

While the anti-LGBT+ bill has widespread support within Ghana, it has also attracted international attention and criticism. Some human rights organizations and foreign governments have expressed concerns about the bill’s potential to infringe on individual rights and freedoms. However, proponents of the bill, like Sam George, argue that Ghana has the right to uphold its values without external interference.

As the elections approach, the anti-LGBT+ bill has become a major campaign issue, with both the NDC and the NPP attempting to use it to rally support. For Sam George and the NDC, the message is clear: electing John Dramani Mahama is the only way to ensure that Ghana stays true to its cultural and moral foundation.

The rally ended with enthusiastic cheers from NDC supporters, many of whom echoed Sam George’s call to action. The passion and energy displayed by the crowd underscored the importance of this issue in the minds of many Ghanaians.

As voters prepare to head to the polls, the question remains: will the promise to protect family values and sign the anti-LGBT+ bill into law be enough to sway the electorate in favor of the NDC? For now, Sam George’s rallying cry continues to resonate across the nation.
