2024 Elections: Interior Minister closes all land borders

The Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey, has directed the temporary closure of all land borders as part of measures to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s December 7 General Elections. This decision was announced in a statement issued on Friday, December 6, 2024.

According to the statement, the closure takes immediate effect and will remain in force until 6:00 PM on Sunday, December 8, 2024. The directive aims to ensure a secure and orderly electoral process as Ghanaians prepare to elect a new president and Members of Parliament.

“The Ministry urges all citizens and travellers to and from Ghana to cooperate with State Security Agencies enforcing this directive,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the importance of collaboration in maintaining peace and security during the election period.

The temporary border closure is part of broader efforts by the government to prevent potential disruptions or external interference that could compromise the credibility of the elections. By limiting cross-border movement, the authorities aim to enhance security measures and create an environment conducive to free and fair voting.

Ghanaians will head to the polls on Saturday, December 7, to participate in a democratic process that will determine the country’s leadership for the next four years. The elections, which involve selecting a president and Members of Parliament, are critical to the nation’s democratic governance and stability.

State Security Agencies have been tasked with enforcing the border closure and monitoring compliance with the directive. Travelers and citizens affected by the measure are urged to plan accordingly and exercise patience as the government implements these precautionary steps.

The announcement comes amid heightened anticipation for the elections, with various stakeholders emphasizing the need for transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles. Political parties, civil society organizations, and international observers have all called for calm and peaceful participation in the electoral process.

The border closure reflects Ghana’s commitment to ensuring a secure electoral environment, free from external influences that could undermine the outcomes. As the nation prepares for this significant democratic exercise, the government’s focus remains on upholding the integrity of the elections and fostering unity among its citizens.

Ghanaians are encouraged to abide by the rules, remain peaceful, and exercise their civic responsibility by voting responsibly on Election Day.
