Mercy Asiedu Turned Down $2M NPP Offer Due to NDC Allegiance

In a surprising revelation, officials from the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) have disclosed a communication between Kumawood actress Mercy Asiedu and representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) shortly before the elections. According to the account, the NPP had offered substantial financial support to the actress to aid in the revival of the struggling Kumawood industry, but the offer was ultimately declined.

During an interview on Rash Hour, Abro, the Public Relations Officer for FIPAG and a staunch NPP member, shed light on the situation. He revealed that senior NPP figures had reached out to Mercy Asiedu with a proposal to provide $2 million in financial assistance. The intention, according to Abro, was to support Kumawood, an industry that has faced significant challenges in recent years, including reduced production and dwindling revenue.

The NPP leaders reportedly sought to bolster the creative arts sector by partnering with notable figures in the industry. Mercy Asiedu, a prominent actress and producer in Kumawood, was approached with the offer as part of these efforts. The only requirement was for her to accept the funds and use them to support projects within the industry.

However, Abro recounted that Mercy Asiedu turned down the proposal, citing her political allegiance to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to Abro, her decision stemmed from her unwillingness to accept financial support from a political party with which she was not aligned. He expressed his disappointment, noting that the offer was intended to benefit the entire industry rather than a specific individual or political agenda.

This revelation has sparked discussions within the entertainment industry and beyond, with opinions divided on Mercy Asiedu’s decision. While some applaud her for standing by her political principles, others believe that the offer should have been accepted for the greater good of Kumawood.

The incident also highlights the interplay between politics and the creative arts sector in Ghana, particularly during election periods. As the story continues to unfold, it raises important questions about the role of political affiliations in shaping opportunities and decisions within the industry.
