Jaguar’s recent rebranding has sparked ridicule, particularly due to its controversial ad campaign, but the upcoming EVs it previews could change perceptions. The Type 00 concept car, despite initial backlash, has garnered more favorable reviews from those who have seen it in person. Its futuristic, 1930s Art Deco-inspired design features a long hood, butterfly doors, and a chopped top. The production model, set for release in 2026, will closely follow this design, with added practicality like two extra doors but will retain its bold, unconventional look.
The production car is expected to feature a striking, low-slung body with retro-futuristic styling, differentiating it from other EVs on the market. It will likely omit a back window, similar to the Polestar 4 and 5, and maintain the chopped-top look. Jaguar plans to deliver competitive performance and range, aiming to appeal to a new customer base, with most buyers being first-time Jaguar owners.
While the ad campaign may have been divisive, the Type 00's design exudes luxury, drawing from Art Deco aesthetics. The production model will retain key design elements, including streaked features on the front and rear, a prominent charging port, and a redesigned "Leaper" logo. The car will be built on Jaguar’s new Electrified Architecture (JEA) platform, expected to support 800-volt architecture for efficient charging and a range of up to 430 miles (EPA) or 478 miles (WLTP). The car will also feature dual-motor all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering.
Expected to cost around $120,000, the new EV will be priced similarly to the old XJ sedan. In line with its new focus, Jaguar plans to reduce its dealer network and introduce “Jaguar houses” in major cities, offering a luxury car-buying experience akin to Rolls-Royce or Bentley. This shift positions Jaguar as a premium, all-electric brand, aiming for a competitive place in the luxury EV market.
