Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Criticizes Border Closures Amid Electoral Concerns.

Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a prominent Member of Parliament and parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed strong concerns regarding the government's decision to close land borders. Speaking on the issue, Ablakwa questioned the rationale behind the closure, particularly during a crucial electoral period, asserting that the move raises serious doubts about the government’s intentions.

He pointed out that if the government truly trusts the integrity of the Electoral Commission and its processes, there should be no need to seal off Ghana’s land borders. According to Ablakwa, the decision seems more politically motivated than necessary for national security, with the closures targeting regions perceived as NDC strongholds. He argued that such actions could disenfranchise innocent citizens, preventing them from exercising their constitutional right to vote.

The NDC candidate criticized what he described as a deliberate ploy to undermine democracy and manipulate the electoral outcomes. Ablakwa emphasized that the decision to close the borders disproportionately affects Ghanaians living in border areas, many of whom rely on cross-border movement for daily survival. He warned that such politically driven actions only serve to deepen mistrust and undermine the credibility of Ghana’s electoral system.

Ablakwa further stated that despite these efforts to suppress voters, Ghanaians have already decided their fate in the upcoming elections. He called on the government to reconsider its decision, prioritize inclusivity, and uphold democratic principles. In his capacity as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Ranking Member, Ablakwa has consistently demonstrated his commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

In conclusion, Ablakwa’s remarks highlight the growing tension surrounding the border closures and their potential impact on the electoral process. His comments reflect broader concerns about fairness, transparency, and the safeguarding of Ghana’s democracy in the face of such controversial decisions.
