Eliesse Ben Seghir: Monaco’s Rising Star with Moroccan Roots
At just 19, Eliesse Ben Seghir is quickly becoming one of Ligue 1's brightest talents. Born in Saint-Tropez to Moroccan parents, the AS Monaco attacking midfielder has shown immense promise despite early challenges. Injuries, pivotal decisions, and dazzling performances have shaped the journey of this young footballer—a little prince in Monaco.
Ben Seghir’s journey began at SC Cogolinois (2010-2016) before stints at Fréjus St-Raphaël (2016-2018) and AS Aix-en-Provence (2018-2020). At 15, he faced a career-defining choice: Olympique de Marseille or AS Monaco. Choosing Monaco proved transformative, as the club nurtured his talent and provided a platform for growth. “I consider my career start quite good, even if injuries have slowed me down,” he told Onze Mondial.
Known for his dynamic style and maturity, Ben Seghir shuns labels like "prodigy," instead focusing on hard work and enjoying the game. “My goal is simple: perform well, score, make decisive passes, and bring joy to fans,” he says. Inspired by Neymar’s freedom and Messi’s brilliance, Ben Seghir’s ambition is clear: to become a key player for Monaco and beyond.
Family as a Cornerstone
Ben Seghir credits his older brother Salim, a professional footballer, for igniting his passion. “I followed him everywhere. He made me want to play football,” he recalls. Family has always been central to his journey, particularly his father, who gifted him his first jersey—a Manchester United kit—at age four. His father’s sudden passing during the COVID-19 pandemic was a devastating blow. “Losing him was an immense shock,” he told Telefoot, but it strengthened his resolve to succeed in his father’s memory.
Champions League Magic and International Dreams
In 2024, Ben Seghir debuted in the Champions League, calling it “the pinnacle of European football.” One highlight was Monaco’s victory against FC Barcelona, which was marked by his dab celebration at Camp Nou. Though eligible for France, he chose Morocco early in his career—a decision he stands by. “I wanted to represent Morocco, so why wait?” he says.
Since March 2024, Ben Seghir has made eight appearances for Morocco, contributing three goals and two assists. Inspired by the Atlas Lions’ historic 2022 World Cup run, he’s eager to help Morocco shine in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the 2030 World Cup.
Driven by ambition, humility, and pride in his roots, Eliesse Ben Seghir is a name to watch in world football.
