Lizzo Wins Key Ruling in Legal Battle Over Harassment Allegations
Lizzo has secured an important victory in an ongoing legal case brought by stylist Asha Daniels, who alleged racial and sexual harassment, a hostile work environment, and unpaid overtime during the singer’s 2023 tour.
On Monday, a Los Angeles federal judge ruled that Daniels could not pursue legal action against Lizzo as an individual. The court identified the Grammy-winning artist's touring and payroll companies as Daniels’ employers, leaving Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc. as a defendant in the case.
U.S. District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha dismissed all seven claims against Lizzo and her tour manager, Carlina Gugliotta. Additionally, the judge granted a partial motion to dismiss several of Daniels’ claims on the basis that her employment during the European leg of the tour fell outside the jurisdiction of U.S. labor laws.
Daniels alleged that Lizzo fostered an “unsafe, sexually charged workplace culture” and accused the star's wardrobe manager of making “racist and fatphobic” comments, including mocking Black women on the team. Lizzo has strongly denied these allegations, with her spokesperson dismissing the lawsuit as an “absurd publicity stunt.”
Lizzo's legal team characterized Daniels as a “disgruntled” former employee making “meritless and salacious” accusations.
The case follows similar allegations made in August 2023 by three of Lizzo’s former tour dancers. The dancers accused the artist of sexual harassment, fat-shaming, and fostering a toxic work environment during incidents in 2021 and 2023. Lizzo has denied these claims, stating:
“These sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional.”
Her company, Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc., has requested that the court dismiss the dancers' lawsuit. However, the dancers have demanded a jury trial.
Known for her empowering messages of body positivity and self-love, Lizzo—real name Melissa Viviane Jefferson—has faced increased scrutiny over her workplace culture in recent years.
Despite the legal challenges, Lizzo has assured fans of her commitment to her career. In April 2024, she addressed online criticism, stating:
“When I say ‘I quit,’ I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention.”
The singer remains focused on her artistry while defending her reputation amid the ongoing legal disputes.
