The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MoTAC) of Ghana has officially announced that Kente, the country’s traditional woven textile, has been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the 2003 Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage. This significant recognition underscores the cultural and historical importance of Kente, which originates from the Asante and Ewe communities of Ghana. Known for its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and deep symbolic meanings, Kente is more than just a fabric—it represents the creativity, heritage, and identity of the Ghanaian people. With this inclusion on the UNESCO list, Ghana is not only celebrating the global appeal of Kente but also demonstrating its commitment to preserving this cherished tradition for future generations.

Andrew Egyapa Mercer, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, expressed the government’s gratitude for this milestone, emphasizing that the inclusion of Kente on UNESCO’s prestigious list highlights Ghana’s role as a leader in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage on the international stage. The recognition is seen as proof of the country’s dedication to safeguarding its rich traditions and sharing them with the world. MoTAC acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including traditional authorities, cultural institutions, artisans, and other implementing agencies, who have played a crucial role in maintaining the authenticity of Kente. The continuous contributions of communities like Bonwire and Agotime, who serve as custodians of this tradition, have been instrumental in achieving this milestone.

As Ghana celebrates this historic moment, MoTAC reaffirms its commitment to promoting and preserving the country’s cultural heritage. The Ministry plans to intensify educational and awareness campaigns to ensure that the significance of Kente is understood globally. This recognition is expected to boost cultural tourism in Ghana, creating economic opportunities and attracting international interest in the country’s vibrant traditions and crafts. The inclusion of Kente on UNESCO’s list is not just a source of pride for the Ghanaian people but also serves as an invitation for the world to engage with and appreciate the depth and beauty of Ghana’s cultural heritage.
