Ugandan Fan Killed Celebrating Arsenal's Victory Over Manchester United

A tragic incident occurred in Uganda following Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United when a fan was shot dead while celebrating the team’s win. The incident took place at a restaurant in Lukaya town, located about 100 km from Uganda's capital, Kampala. According to reports, a security guard opened fire on a large crowd of jubilant Arsenal supporters, fatally injuring 30-year-old John Ssenyonga and wounding another fan, Lawrence Mugejera.

The altercation began as the match neared its end, with fans celebrating Arsenal's victory. Witnesses claimed that the restaurant manager, irritated by the noise from the crowd, requested the security guard to intervene. When fans ignored the request to quiet down, the building’s power was switched off, further escalating tensions. In response, the guard allegedly opened fire, shooting several rounds into the crowd. Ssenyonga died at the scene, while Mugejera was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

The police are currently searching for both the security guard and the restaurant manager, who are reportedly on the run. The authorities recovered a firearm from the scene and condemned the violence. Regional police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye urged the public to report any information that could help in locating the suspects, adding that fans should control their excitement in such situations to avoid further incidents.

This tragedy follows a pattern of violent incidents linked to football matches in Uganda, particularly involving English Premier League clubs. Earlier this year, an Arsenal fan was stabbed by a Manchester United supporter after a heated argument over a match result. The violence has sparked calls for more caution among fans and for better regulation of celebrations, as such tensions continue to result in fatal outcomes.

Uganda is known for its passionate following of English football, with Arsenal being a particularly popular club. However, incidents like these highlight the darker side of football fandom, where the intense emotions surrounding matches sometimes lead to tragic violence. Authorities have urged fans to celebrate responsibly and avoid letting their excitement turn into dangerous confrontations.
