Taylor Swift started the Eras Tour when people needed it most. Now, it’s time to say goodbye
In 2007, Taylor Swift was a rising country artist performing at Cowboys, a small bar near Colorado Springs. At the end of her set, she noticed a fan singing her songs louder than anyone else at the front of the stage. Swift removed two purple beaded bracelets from her wrist and handed them to then-college student Carola Lovering, a token of appreciation for her enthusiasm. Lovering kept one bracelet and gave the other to her best friend, Joanie Goldfarb, who was beside her.
Seventeen years later, Lovering, now an established author and mother of two, reunited with Goldfarb at Swift’s Eras Tour this October. Although the original bracelets were long lost, the two friends embraced the Eras Tour tradition of exchanging friendship bracelets with fellow concertgoers, symbolizing the enduring connection Swift fosters among her fans.
The Eras Tour, which concludes with its final shows in Vancouver, has been a global cultural phenomenon. Featuring a three-hour performance with a 44-song setlist spanning Swift’s 18-year career, the tour captivated millions. It attracted fans from all walks of life, including high-profile figures like Paul McCartney and top politicians. The impact extended beyond the music, generating economic booms for local economies and creating a collective joy for audiences still recovering from the pandemic's effects.
Jasen Emmons, chief curator and VP of curatorial affairs at the Los Angeles Grammy Museum likened the cultural significance of the Eras Tour to legends like Elvis, Michael Jackson, Sinatra, Madonna, and the Beatles. Whether she orchestrated it or not, she’s created this zeitgeist around the tour that feels unprecedented,†Emmons told CNN.
The tour’s success also marked a triumphant return for live music in the post-pandemic world. The global shutdown in 2020 brought the music industry to a standstill, canceling Swift’s previously planned Lover Fest. In March 2023, as life began to normalize, Swift launched the Eras Tour, her first in six years, celebrating her expansive discography and reconnection with her fans.
Swift’s Eras Tour not only underscored her evolution as an artist but also emphasized the power of music to unite people. With its record-breaking attendance and emotional resonance, the tour serves as a historic chapter in modern music, cementing Swift’s legacy as a cultural icon.
