Police arrest 12 suspects for looting in Tamale, causing damage

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 suspects in connection with looting in Tamale and the destruction of property in Damango following the conclusion of the 2024 presidential election. These incidents occurred shortly after Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat to John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In Tamale, chaos erupted when a group of youth stormed the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly premises, vandalized property, and looted food items from a warehouse. According to eyewitnesses, the individuals, who were reportedly wearing NDC-branded T-shirts, targeted food supplies intended for community distribution. The incident has been widely condemned, with many calling for calm and accountability in the aftermath of the election.

A separate incident occurred in Damango in the Savannah Region, where the district office of the Electoral Commission (EC) was set ablaze amidst tensions surrounding the collation of election results. The fire caused significant damage to the building and disrupted the ongoing counting process for the parliamentary and presidential results in the constituency.

Damango is a crucial constituency, as it is represented by Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, who is seeking re-election as a Member of Parliament. Reports suggest that disagreements over the collation process may have fueled the attack. The Electoral Commission has assured the public that measures are being taken to ensure the integrity of the results despite the disruption.

The police have confirmed the arrests of suspects believed to be involved in these incidents. A statement released by the Ghana Police Service indicated that investigations are underway to identify all individuals responsible for the destruction and looting. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from acts of violence or lawlessness.

These post-election disturbances have drawn widespread attention, with many expressing concern about the potential for further unrest. Political and community leaders have called for restraint, emphasizing the importance of preserving peace and upholding democratic principles during this critical period.

As the Electoral Commission finalizes its work, security forces are on high alert to prevent additional incidents. The government and law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to maintaining order and ensuring that those found culpable face the full extent of the law.
