Elections 2024: NDC makes history for securing 188 seats in parliament

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has achieved a remarkable performance in Ghana’s parliamentary elections, securing a commanding majority of seats in key regions across the country. Early results indicate overwhelming support for the opposition party in its traditional strongholds and impressive gains in critical swing regions.

In the Upper West and Upper East regions, the NDC secured a clean sweep, winning all 11 and 15 parliamentary seats, respectively. The party also dominated the Oti and Savannah regions, capturing all 9 and 6 seats, respectively. Similarly, the Volta Region reaffirmed its status as an NDC stronghold with an unbroken 18 out of 18 seats.

In Bono East, the NDC secured 10 out of 11 seats, while in Bono and Ahafo, the party won 11 out of 12 and 5 out of 6 seats, respectively. In the Western Region, the NDC claimed 15 out of 17 seats, and in Western North, it captured 8 out of 9 seats. The Central Region saw the party take 18 out of 23 seats, further solidifying its strong performance in traditionally competitive areas.

Greater Accra proved a significant battleground, with the NDC securing 30 out of 34 seats, showcasing its growing influence in the capital. In the Northern Region, the party claimed 12 out of 18 seats, while in the Eastern Region, it won 10 out of 33 seats. Even in the Ashanti Region, traditionally a New Patriotic Party (NPP) stronghold, the NDC managed to capture 7 out of 47 seats, a modest but notable achievement.

These results highlight the NDC’s dominance in its traditional bases, such as Volta, Upper West, and Upper East, where it achieved clean sweeps. The party’s strong showing in swing regions, particularly Greater Accra and Central, underscores its strategic gains in areas critical to the national political balance.

The ruling NPP retained control in the Ashanti Region, winning 40 out of 47 seats, but faced significant losses elsewhere, including Bono East and the Western Region. Analysts view this as a signal of a shifting political landscape, with the NDC emerging as a formidable force in the legislature.

With final tallies still being confirmed, the NDC’s robust parliamentary performance is expected to have a profound impact on governance and the presidential race. As Ghana moves forward, the NDC’s strengthened presence in Parliament positions the party to shape the country’s political and legislative agenda effectively.
