Kumasi Erupts in Jubilant NDC Celebrations Ahead of Electoral Declaration

By Graphic Online

Kumasi witnessed an outpouring of joy on Sunday, December 8, 2024, as supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filled the streets to celebrate what they believed was an imminent victory for their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama. This came ahead of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) official declaration of the presidential election results.

In key communities such as Atonsu, Esereso, and Oforikrom, jubilant NDC supporters, buoyed by their own collated figures, began celebrations, claiming their candidate was in a "comfortable lead." These celebrations intensified in the party's strongholds, including Asewase, Aboabo, and Asokore-Mampong, where crowds of enthusiastic supporters took to the streets with music and party paraphernalia.

Supporters thronged the streets using various modes of transport to display their excitement. Tricycles, locally referred to as "Aboboyaa," carried cheering crowds, while others sped around on motorbikes or perched precariously on moving vehicles. At the Atonsu High School Junction, revelers completely took over the Atonsu-Lake road, leading to significant traffic disruptions.

Music played a pivotal role in the celebrations, with loudspeakers blaring party songs, including "Aseda" by King Paluta—a song popularly associated with the opposing New Patriotic Party (NPP). The festive atmosphere was characterized by dancing, singing, and waving of party-branded T-shirts and Mahama portraits.

Despite the celebratory mood, the actions of some supporters raised safety concerns. A number of them climbed onto the bonnets of moving vehicles, risking injuries in their bid to express their excitement. Others took up roles traditionally performed by the police, directing traffic to prevent accidents amidst the congestion.

While some motorists expressed frustration at the delays caused by the impromptu street parties, most showed patience, carefully navigating through the crowded roads.

The celebrations highlight the palpable anticipation among NDC supporters ahead of the EC’s official declaration. The Electoral Commission has reminded the public of the 72-hour legal window for result collation and announcement, urging all parties to exercise patience.

As Kumasi's streets remained filled with jubilation, the festive atmosphere underscored the high stakes of the 2024 election. The NDC remains hopeful for what could be a monumental victory for their candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
