Auxerre is gearing up for a challenging encounter with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) this Friday, December 5, as they look to overcome the reigning champions who remain unbeaten in Ligue 1. Despite their recent setback to Toulouse, Auxerre has been in strong form, with a five-match unbeaten streak, including four victories, moving them into the top half of the table.
Defender Gideon Mensah expressed confidence in his team’s chances, despite PSG’s dominant run. “We know it’s a long season, so there will be ups and downs,” Mensah remarked after their first loss in six games. “Losses like this remind us to stay focused because anything can happen.” Mensah also believes PSG's recent slip-ups, including a loss to Bayern Munich and a draw against Nantes, may show vulnerability.
Auxerre has been formidable at home this season, holding the second-best record in Ligue 1 behind PSG. They have secured 15 points from six home games, thanks to the passionate support of their fans. “Playing at home with our supporters has always been our strength,” Mensah said. He recalled that although Auxerre lost 2-1 to PSG at home two seasons ago, the performance was much closer than their 5-0 defeat in Paris.
Mensah, who has yet to secure a win against PSG in four League 1 encounters, is eager to break that streak: “Winning against bigger clubs feels incredible. Losing to PSG again is not something I’m looking forward to.” Key to Auxerre's hopes is Hamid Traore, who has scored six goals since joining on loan from Bournemouth. Traore has been instrumental in helping Auxerre earn crucial points.
Despite the tough challenge ahead, Mensah’s focus remains on the team's primary objective: staying in Ligue 1. “Our goal is still the same: we need to remain in Ligue 1,” he concluded. The upcoming match against PSG will be a true test for Christophe Pélissier's side as they aim to cause an upset.
