Ghana's 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections are over, and the results released so far are surprising. Not only has the ruling New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate lost the election; but some big wings and well-known members of Parliament of the party has lost their seats too.
Many Ghanaians saw these MPs as "demigods" because of their perceived arrogance and lack of respect for the public.
The elections were highly competitive, with the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) fiercely contesting the presidency and 276 parliamentary seats. The intense competition led to unexpected losses for some sitting NPP MPs.
Many Ghanaians celebrated the defeat of these NPP MPs, who were seen as arrogant and out of touch with the public. Some of the notable NPP MPs who lost their seats include:
- Hon. K.T. Hammond (Adansi Asokwa, Ashanti): Lost to Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the NDC with 13,275 votes to 14,229.
- Henry Quartey (Ayawaso Central, Greater Accra): Lost to Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu of the NDC with 23,345 votes to 29,755.
- Ursula Owusu- Ekuful (Ablekuma West, Greater Accra): Lost to Rev. Kweku Addo of the NDC with 26,575 votes to 31,866.
- Hawa Koomson, the incumbent MP for Awutu Senya East (Central Region), was unseated by NDC's Naa Koryoo Okunor.
-NPP's Ophelia Mensah Hayford lost her Mfantseman seat (Central Region) to Prince Ebenezer Arhin of the NDC, who secured 35,832 against her 23,349 votes.
- Sylvester Tetteh (Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, Greater Accra): Lost to Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC with 27,888 votes to 37,473.
- Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer(Sekond, Western Region): Lost to Blay Nyameke Armah of the NDC with 11,084 votes to 14,558.
- John Peter Amewu lost the Hohoe seat (Volta Region) to the NDC's Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo.
- John Dumelo, NDC's parliamentary Candidate for Ayawaso West-Wuogon, Greater Accra, also defeated the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan in a closely watch rematch.
- In Dormaa East, the NPP's Twum Barima obtained 12,050 votes, narrowly losing to Rachel Owusuaa of the NDC, who secured 12,310 votes.
- In Assin Central, a parliamentary seat Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has held for several years but decided not to contest again, has also been snatched by the NDC.
- Hon. Darkoa Newman of Okaikwei South Constituency lost against NDC's Ernest Adomako, she lost with 24,263 votes whiles her opponent obtained 32,691 votes to win the elections.
All newly elected Members of Parliament who wins power, but fail to deliver, must remember that, their positions are not birthright, but a privilege granted by the people. Their constituents' trust is fragile, and once broken, it's hard to repair.
It must be noted well by MPs that, complacency breeds discontent, and in politics, discontent can be a powerful catalyst for change. These NPP "demigods" who lost their seats are a testament to this. Their behavior, perceived as arrogant and out of touch, ultimately led to their downfall.
