Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Okaikwei Central, has emerged victorious in a dramatic and hotly contested parliamentary election during Ghana’s 2024 general elections. This victory not only marks a significant triumph for the NDC but also unseats the incumbent Member of Parliament, Patrick Yaw Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Baba Sadiq's victory is being hailed as a turning point for the constituency, setting the stage for a new era of representation.

The initial stages of vote counting suggested a win for Patrick Boamah. However, objections raised by the NDC prompted the Electoral Commission (EC) to revisit the results. This led to an intense review process that eventually confirmed Baba Sadiq as the winner, with a total of 15,383 votes compared to Boamah's 14,949. The declaration was made after meticulous scrutiny, underscoring the importance of transparency in electoral processes.

### Disputed Results and the NDC's Case

Controversy erupted when the NDC raised concerns about discrepancies in the tallying of results from several polling stations. The party argued that the EC should rely on two-thirds of the polling station results—representing approximately 78 percent of the constituency's data—as a valid basis for declaring a winner. Their case was supported by anomalies discovered in about 31 pink sheets.

In response, the EC conducted a thorough review, sealing the contentious pink sheets in a ballot box for further examination. These documents were stored securely pending feedback from the Greater Accra Regional Director of the EC. The NPP's representative refrained from making public statements during these deliberations, leaving the resolution process largely guided by the EC and the NDC's persistence.

### Chaos and Delays in the Collation Process

The election in Okaikwei Central was marred by significant delays and disruptions, particularly at the Ansurudeen Islamic School polling station. On December 7, tensions flared when the Presiding Officer proposed reducing the number of polling agents due to space constraints. This suggestion ignited heated disagreements, culminating in the destruction of voting booths and further delays in the collation of results.

Despite these challenges, the collation process was eventually completed. The EC’s final declaration confirmed Baba Sadiq as the rightful winner, bringing a sense of closure to a process that had been fraught with uncertainty.

### A Victory with Broader Implications

Baba Sadiq’s win is being celebrated as a significant achievement for the NDC, signaling a shift in the political dynamics of Okaikwei Central. His success reflects not only the electorate’s desire for change but also the resilience of the NDC in navigating electoral challenges. This victory also underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability in ensuring free and fair elections.

For Patrick Yaw Boamah, who has served as the MP for Okaikwei Central, the loss marks the end of an era. The NPP’s silence during the review process and their subsequent defeat may prompt introspection within the party as they strategize for future elections.

### Looking Ahead

With his victory, Baba Sadiq faces the immense responsibility of delivering on the promises made during his campaign. Constituents are hopeful that his leadership will bring development and address the pressing issues facing Okaikwei Central. As he prepares to take office, all eyes will be on his ability to fulfill these expectations and pave the way for a brighter future for the constituency.

The 2024 general elections have proven to be a defining moment for Ghana’s democracy, showcasing the resilience of its institutions and the active engagement of its citizens. Baba Sadiq's triumph is a testament to the power of perseverance and the democratic spirit that continues to shape the nation.
