The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly appealed to its supporters nationwide to abstain from acts of vandalism targeting state properties following the party's triumph in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. Since December 8, reports have emerged of individuals linked to the NDC engaging in destructive activities across several regions, prompting swift condemnation from the party leadership.

In a statement issued on December 9, the NDC described the destruction of public assets as deeply unacceptable and stressed that such actions jeopardize Ghana's peace and stability. The party implored its members to celebrate responsibly and demonstrate behavior that promotes unity and national cohesion.

"The vandalism of state property, mob justice, and any form of lawlessness threaten the peace and stability of our beloved country," the statement read. "These acts are grievous offenses under Ghanaian law and will not be tolerated by the Ghana Police Service."

The statement further emphasized that the NDC’s hard-fought victory was an opportunity to unite the country rather than sow discord.

The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, underscored the importance of celebrating responsibly while placing trust in the incoming government under President-elect John Dramani Mahama to restore accountability and order in the nation.

The NDC urged calm across its 16 regional branches, calling for restraint amidst reports that both disgruntled supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and overjoyed NDC members were involved in various incidents.

Reports of Vandalism and Looting

According to the NDC, some of the reported vandalism was allegedly carried out by NPP supporters angered by their party’s loss, with claims that NPP parliamentary candidates had hoarded state-provided materials such as food and fertilizer intended for voter inducements before the December 7 polls.

In other cases, overzealous NDC supporters were reportedly overwhelmed by excitement, leading to disruptive celebrations in some areas.

A Plea for Responsibility

The NDC reiterated its commitment to upholding accountability in governance and stated that their approach would align with the rule of law. They acknowledged the frustrations of Ghanaians after years under the Akufo-Addo-led administration but cautioned that lawlessness undermines efforts to rebuild trust in government.

"The day of accountability is finally here," the statement declared. "Our patience is critical at this stage. Let us celebrate responsibly and ensure that our actions reflect the values we stand for."

Broader Implications

The appeal for calm comes at a critical juncture, as Ghana prepares for the transition of power. Any further unrest risks overshadowing the NDC's electoral success and dampening its vision for the nation’s future.

Reports of vandalism coincide with mounting tensions in parts of the country, with police confirming multiple arrests related to property destruction and looting. Meanwhile, some state facilities remain locked in the Northern Regions, with security personnel deployed to maintain order.

Call to All Ghanaians

The NDC's message was not only aimed at its members but also addressed the broader Ghanaian populace. The statement called on citizens, regardless of political affiliation, to prioritize peace and stability during the transition period.

The party’s leadership stressed the need for collective responsibility in ensuring Ghana remains a beacon of democracy in Africa.

With the NDC set to assume office on January 7, 2025, the party promised to uphold the principles of probity and accountability. However, it warned that any acts of retribution, destruction, or mob justice would not be condoned, urging the Ghana Police Service to enforce the law where necessary.

Looking Ahead

As Ghanaians reflect on the 2024 elections, the NDC's call for unity and restraint serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the nation's hard-won democratic values. By advocating for peace and responsible celebration, the party aims to set a positive tone for the incoming administration’s tenure.

In the coming weeks, the focus will be on ensuring a smooth transition, fostering unity among citizens, and addressing the grievances that have fueled tensions during this electoral cycle. The NDC's victory offers a fresh start, and its leaders are determined to lead by example, urging their supporters to do the same.
